It’s normal for kids to feel angry from time to time. Eliminating all anger is never the goal. Instead, what’s important is that kids learn how to deal with this emotion in a safe and healthy way.
Our Anger Coping Skills for Kids worksheet briefly describes four coping skills that will help kids bring down the temperature:
- Walk away
- Take a deep breath
- Do something fun
- Talk about it
In-session, discuss and practice each skill. Consider using the following questions to facilitate discussion with your young clients:
- “Tell me about something that made you angry this week.”
- “What is something fun you can do to feel less angry?”
- “Who is someone you can talk to when you feel angry?”
- “Which coping skill would be most helpful at school? At home?”
Afterward, share this handout as a take-home reminder of anger coping skills.
This worksheet is illustrated with images from our digital storybook, The Angry Otter. This engaging story will teach kids about anger triggers, warning signs, and coping skills.
