Belly Breathing coping skill for kids

Belly breathing is an effective way to relax, recharge, and cope with difficult emotions. Plus, it’s simple, and great for kids.

The Belly Breathing: Relaxation for Kids worksheet offers step-by-step instructions to teach children the breathing exercise. This handout was designed to accompany the digital storybook Toad Learns Belly Breathing, but it can also be used as a stand-alone tool.

If the child struggles to expand their belly, have them practice while lying down. Place a stuffed animal on their belly and ask them to push the animal upward as they fill their belly with air. Once they can do this easily, guide them through the remaining steps.

The benefits of belly breathing increase over time. After mastering the technique, encourage children to practice it several times a day, especially when upset.
