Dealing With Feelings emotion exercise

It can be hard to find words to describe how you’re feeling. This is especially true for kids, who haven’t yet developed a big vocabulary for emotions.

Dealing With Feelings is a fun activity designed to help kids talk about their feelings. This activity helps clients get to know their emotions by associating them with their senses and objects in the outside world.

Dealing With Feelings includes a set of colorfully illustrated picture cards that kids use to talk about their emotions in new ways (e.g., “My anger is like a volcano,” “My sadness feels cold”). Improving emotional literacy can have many positive effects, like increasing social skills and coping skills and decreasing uncomfortable emotions.

This tool is intended for young clients dealing with anger, fear, sadness, anxiety, or any other emotion. After working through this activity, take the opportunity to explore the emotion more deeply. When has your client had this feeling, how did they handle it, and what was the outcome?
