Mindfulness Activities for Kids instructor's guide

Mindfulness means paying attention to the present moment, without judging or trying to change it. By focusing on the here and now, we take a break from worrying about the past or future. Mindfulness is a helpful tool for kids trying to manage feelings like anger and anxiety.

One great quality of mindfulness is that it isn’t just relaxing—it can be fun! Our Mindfulness Activities for Kids worksheet describes three engaging exercises that therapists, teachers, or parents can practice with kids of all ages. Feel free to practice them word for word, or get creative and adapt them to your situation.

The exercises include:

  • Ocean breathing
  • Raisin exercise
  • Five senses

Practicing mindfulness regularly leads to increased benefit over time. This handout is a great tool for a parent who would like to practice with their child between therapy sessions to further reinforce learning.

After practicing, take a moment to discuss how mindfulness feels different from the usual way of being. Is mindfulness easy or difficult? When could mindfulness be helpful for coping with feelings?
