Squeeze and Relax Script progressive muscle relaxation for kids

Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) is a powerful skill that works by systematically tensing and relaxing muscle groups throughout the body. This technique teaches you to recognize and release feelings of tension.

The Squeeze and Relax Script: Progressive muscle relaxation for kids is a kid-friendly version of this practice that uses fun imagery and language.

For example, kids learn to tense their hands and arms by pretending they are squeezing juicy oranges. They learn to tense their feet and legs by imagining they’re digging their toes in sand. When they release tension, they’re encouraged to notice and enjoy the feeling of relaxation.

To reinforce learning, try the following questions after the exercise:

  • What was your favorite part of the exercise?
  • How did you feel after practicing?
  • When can you use Squeeze and Relax on your own?

For a guided version of this exercise, check out Squeeze and Relax Audio. Help your young clients practice in session and at home with an adult.
